For the students who've mastered the first 100 Dolch words, these are the next words for them to start learning:

Students need to learn these high frequency words "like popcorn" (without hesitation).  They are called "sight words" because most of them do not follow a direct sound:symbol relationship.  Other names for these words are "Dolch Words".  These words are like "glue" words - they comprise the majority of the words in all sentences.  Therefore, the children need to be able to read them on sight without having to decode.

The MINIMUM expectation of the Brevard School System is for all kindergarten children to know the 55 words above and be reading at Level 4 or above to progress to first grade.  However, for your child to enter first grade as an average or above average student, he/she needs to be reading above the minimum expectations.  The following 45 words are the ENRICHMENT words listed on the Brevard Public Schools' Kindergarten Literacy Survey:
